Film boat hire in Weymouth Bay
Sheltered by Portland, Weymouth Bay is some of the best sailing water in Britain, which is why the 2012 Olympic sailing was held here. The Georgian seafront, the harbour, Portland Harbour's breakwaters and the start of Chesil Beach give you a lot of looks in a small area.
The bay is often calm when the open coast is not, so it suits steady camera work and running shots alongside yachts and fast boats. Round Portland Bill it is a different sea, and only for a seaworthy boat on the right day.
Permission. Weymouth Harbour and Portland Harbour have separate harbour authorities, and Portland is a working port. We plan the shoot with whichever the route crosses.
Portland Race. The tidal race off Portland Bill is one of the roughest stretches of water on the south coast. We plan any shots out there around slack water and the forecast, or film it from a safe distance.
Drones. Portland Harbour sits inside the Portland flight restriction zone, and there are military danger areas offshore, so drone work there needs permission and planning. The town and most of the bay are clear, but Weymouth's seafront is close to the zone's edge, so we check every position.
Filming somewhere else? See all our film boat hire locations, or tell us where and we will find the right boat.
