Thames water safety

Water safety on the Thames

Safety boats, water safety crew and a written plan for anyone working on, in or beside the river. The tide, the traffic and the cold water are planned for, so the production can concentrate on the shot.
Safety first, then the shot

Cover for cast, crew and kit

The Thames is tidal, fast, cold and busy. Anyone working on or near it needs proper cover: a safety boat in the right place, crew who know what to do, and a plan everyone has read. We provide all three, and fit them around the shot rather than the other way round.
How it works

Planning safety on the river

The plan. Every job starts with a risk assessment and a safety plan built around the scene, the tide, the location and the people in it, shared with your production and safety teams before the day.

The boats. Safety boats sit where they can reach anyone in trouble quickly, without drifting into shot. Their crews brief cast and crew before anyone goes near the water.

Swims and stunts. A swim or a stunt in the water needs the Port of London Authority’s permission as well as safety cover, and the cold and the stream are the real dangers. We plan them around slack water and the conditions on the day.

Weather. Wind against the tide, cold water and poor visibility change what is safe. We make the call with you early, and your quote says what happens if the weather stops the shoot.

Questions

Questions about water safety on the Thames

If anyone is working on, in or close to the water, usually yes. We look at the scene and tell you what cover it needs, and our safety plan goes to your production and safety teams.

Yes. We covered Surfers Against Sewage’s swim from Teddington Lock to Westminster with a camera boat and a safety boat, and arranged the permissions and the safety plan.

RYA Safety Boat, first aid and swiftwater rescue certificates, with copies available before the day.

A safety boat’s job is safety, so it does not double as the camera boat. We run a camera boat alongside it.
