Film water safety at Newhaven
Newhaven sits at the mouth of the River Ouse, with a long breakwater, the cross-Channel ferry to Dieppe and fishing boats working from inside the harbour. East of the town, the chalk cliffs run on towards Seaford Head and the Seven Sisters, one of the most filmed stretches of the Sussex coast.
Seaworthy safety boats, qualified safety crew and a written safety plan and risk assessment your production can file, with cover placed around the scene rather than the other way round. Work under the cliffs gets a boat that can reach people on the rocks as well as in the water.
Who is in charge. Newhaven Port & Properties is the harbour authority, and its harbour master runs the port, with Newhaven Radio handling the traffic. Work inside the harbour is planned with them, and the ferry always comes first.
The entrance. The Ouse runs out hard on the ebb, and a southerly wind against it can make the harbour entrance rough, so water work keeps away from the entrance at those times.
Cold water and cliffs. Cold water, swell and falls of chalk from the cliffs shape where cast can work, so scenes along the shore are planned with a clear way off.
Drones. Newhaven is clear of restricted airspace, with no zone within 4 km. Take-off spots on the port's land or the cliff tops need their owners' agreement first.
