Film boat hire on the River Fowey
A deep, narrow harbour between steep wooded hills, with Fowey's waterfront on one side and Polruan on the other. It is also a working port: ships come up the river to load china clay and turn in the harbour with tugs, which makes for remarkable shots of big hulls in a small space.
The harbour is sheltered and calm, so a steady camera boat can hold position for long takes. Upriver towards Lostwithiel it narrows and dries, which calls for a smaller boat and a rising tide.
Permission. Fowey Harbour Commissioners look after the harbour and the river. We plan the shoot with the harbour master, and ship movements always come first.
Traffic. Ferries, yachts and the commercial ships share a narrow channel, so we plan positions that keep the camera boat out of the fairway when ships are moving.
Drones. Fowey is clear of restricted airspace. There is a military danger area offshore, so we check before flying out to sea, and take-off needs the landowner's OK.
