The Thames after dark

Night filming on the Thames

The bridges lit up, the skyline reflected in the water and the city glowing behind. Our boats run after dark, we rig lights on board and we fly drones at night with the right permissions.
After dark

London’s river at its best

At night the Thames turns into a ribbon of light: the bridges, the Eye, the towers and their reflections on the water. Filming it well takes boats that run after dark, crews who know the river at night, lighting that works on a moving deck, and a plan for the tide and the traffic.
How it works

Planning a night shoot on the river

The light. Blue hour, just after sunset, gives you the city lights and colour in the sky together. We plan the runs so the boat is in position when it comes.

On board. We rig lights on the boats to light faces and product on deck, powered from the boat or from batteries, and keep the skipper’s view of the river clear.

Navigation. At night every boat shows its navigation lights and keeps a sharp lookout, and the skipper decides where the boat can safely go. Bright lights aimed forward can dazzle other vessels, so we rig with that in mind.

Drones. Night flights need the right permissions and a safe, lit spot to take off and land. We plan them around the airspace and the boats.
