Filming from the water

London looks best from the river. The shots you only get from a boat, and the run that takes in most of the city’s landmarks in one go.

At a glance

  • From the water, London’s landmarks line up as a moving backdrop that no spot on the bank can give you.
  • One run from the O2 to Westminster passes Canary Wharf, Greenwich, Tower Bridge, the City, St Paul’s and the London Eye.
  • The boat is the base too: shelter, power and room for the crew, with clients watching live.
  • A drone can launch from the same boat, once the airspace is sorted.

Shots you only get from the water

  • Tower Bridge and the Houses of Parliament straight on, from the middle of the river
  • The skyline sliding past behind a presenter, an interview or a roundtable
  • Tracking shots alongside other boats, at water level
  • Reveals under the bridges and round the bends
  • Aerials launched from the boat, over the river rather than the crowds

The O2 to Westminster run

One run up the river from the O2 to Westminster takes in most of London’s skyline in order: the O2 and Canary Wharf, the Old Royal Naval College and the Cutty Sark at Greenwich, Tower Bridge, the Tower of London and HMS Belfast, the Shard and the City, St Paul’s, Shakespeare’s Globe and Tate Modern, then the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament. Every one of them is seen properly from the water.

The boat is the base

A film boat is more than a camera position. There is shelter for the crew and the kit, power, a toilet on most boats, and room for the director and clients to watch live. Between set-ups the skipper repositions while you reset, so the day keeps moving.

Drones from the same boat

The same boat can launch the drone, so the aerials and the water-level shots come from one plan. Most of the river through central London sits inside protected airspace, and the airspace guide shows where.
